Allen Weisselberg Former CFO of Trump Organization, Pleads Guilty to Perjury

PUBLISHED: March 5, 2024 at 4:26 am

Allen H. Weisselberg, the former chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, has admitted to perjury charges, marking a new chapter in his legal journey. Weisselberg, who has remained fiercely loyal to former President Donald Trump, did not implicate his former boss in his admission.

Weisselberg has served the Trump family’s business interests for nearly half a century. He was initially hired as a bookkeeper by Donald Trump’s father, Fred, in the 1970s. Over the years, Weisselberg rose through the ranks to become the chief financial officer of the Trump Organization. His roles included handling the Trump family’s company finances, compiling tax returns, and managing the company after Trump’s presidential election.

Weisselberg faced five counts of perjury. As part of a plea deal with the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, Weisselberg pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree perjury. The charges stem from his involvement in the New York Attorney General’s fraud investigation into Trump’s real estate empire. Specifically, Weisselberg admitted to lying under oath about the actual size of Trump’s Fifth Avenue penthouse and when he became aware of the discrepancy.

In his plea, Weisselberg acknowledged that he lied during his testimony at the AG’s trial and in multiple other instances during the investigation. However, he did not plead guilty to perjuring himself at the trial, thereby avoiding a potentially stiffer sentence.

Weisselberg’s guilty plea could spell trouble for the Trump Organization. His admission underlines the gravity of the allegations levelled against the company and its top executives. The guilty plea could also strengthen the prosecution’s case in the pending criminal trial against Trump.

The former CFO’s admission may deter other witnesses in Trump’s circle from lying under oath. Moreover, his perjury charges could discredit Weisselberg, who was involved in the hush-money deal and has disputed parts of the prosecution’s evidence.

Weisselberg has had previous encounters with the law. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to tax fraud charges related to his work at the Trump Organization. Although he did not implicate Trump in his admission, he agreed to testify against the Trump Organization at its trial on the same charges.

Following his guilty plea, Weisselberg served nearly 100 days in jail. With his new admission of guilt to perjury, he faces another potential stint in jail. His sentencing is set for April 10, where prosecutors are seeking a five-month sentence.

Following his guilty plea, Weisselberg’s lawyer, Seth L. Rosenberg, released a statement saying that his client “looks forward to putting this situation behind him.” Weisselberg did not respond to questions from reporters after the hearing.

The legal troubles for Trump and his organization are far from over. In addition to the perjury case involving Weisselberg, Trump is scheduled to go to trial on several felony charges related to a hush-money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. The trial is set to begin on March 25.

The guilty plea by Allen Weisselberg is a significant development in the ongoing investigations into the Trump Organization. His admission to perjury charges underscores the serious allegations against the company and its top executives. As the legal proceedings continue, all eyes will be on the upcoming criminal trial against Trump and the potential implications for his organization.
