Luminar Partners with Mercedes-AMG to F1

PUBLISHED: January 9, 2024 at 6:17 pm

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Luminar, a leading global automotive technology company, and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team have announced their partnership to integrate Luminar’s LiDAR technology into the Official FIA F1® Safety Car.

LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a critical component in the development of autonomous driving systems. Luminar’s LiDAR technology uses lasers to create a highly detailed 3D map of the surrounding environment, enabling precise object detection at higher speeds and under adverse driving conditions. What sets Luminar’s technology apart is its chip-level development approach and higher wavelength, allowing it to detect road debris up to 250 meters and objects up to 500 meters ahead.

Luminar and Mercedes-AMG will collaborate to integrate Luminar’s LiDAR technology into the roofline of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, the Official FIA F1® Safety Car. Once operational and subject to FIA and Formula 1® regulatory compliance and approval, the sensor will create a real-time 3D map of the environment ahead of the safety car. This integration will significantly enhance the safety car driver’s ability to assess the situation on the track while maintaining high speeds.

Austin Russell, Founder and CEO of Luminar, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “Luminar’s technology has always been about pushing the limits of performance while improving automotive safety – and with F1, Mercedes-AMG are taking it to the extreme on a world stage of automotive enthusiasts.”

The collaboration between Luminar and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team is an extension of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation and safety in driving. Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz AG Chief Technology Officer & Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team Non-Executive Chairman, emphasized their vision for accident-free driving in Mercedes production cars. This partnership with Luminar will help realize that vision and further demonstrate the performance and safety advantages of Luminar’s technology.

Toto Wolff, CEO and Team Principal of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating, “It is a truly thrilling and innovative area which will have far-reaching implications for the automotive industry and mobility more generally.” The collaboration will leverage the initial development work between Luminar and Mercedes-Benz as a foundation, showcasing their shared commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship.

The FIA F1® Safety Car plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of drivers during races and practice sessions. When hazards such as crashes or heavy rain occur, the safety car is brought onto the track to guide and limit the speed of the race cars. The integration of Luminar’s LiDAR technology into the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series safety car will enhance the driver’s situational awareness, especially when navigating debris or obstacles on the track.

The ability of LiDAR to detect still and moving objects at high speeds and under wide-ranging conditions makes it an excellent match for the Official FIA F1® Safety Car. The high resolution and long-range capabilities of Luminar’s LiDAR will enable the safety car driver to detect smaller objects, including carbon fiber debris, which often has low reflectivity. This advanced detection system will assist the driver in making informed decisions to avoid causing further damage or crashes on the track.

Luminar’s collaboration with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team and Mercedes-Benz signifies a major step forward in automotive safety and technology. Luminar’s LiDAR technology, already recognized for its potential in autonomous driving systems, will now be showcased on the world stage of Formula 1 racing. This partnership has the potential to increase trust and interest in Luminar’s capabilities, leading to broader adoption by other automotive manufacturers.

While the partnership between Luminar and Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team is a significant milestone, the commercialization and scalability of LiDAR technology remain crucial factors. Luminar’s production run of sensors at its facility in Monterrey, Mexico, marks an important step towards meeting customer expectations. Achieving a consistent production rate will be essential for the successful integration of LiDAR technology into mass-produced vehicles.

As the automotive industry continues to pursue advancements in autonomous driving and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), LiDAR technology is expected to play a pivotal role. Luminar’s early partnerships with leading automotive brands, including Volvo Cars and Mercedes-Benz, position the company favorably in an industry moving towards greater adoption of ADAS and autonomous vehicles (AVs). The successful implementation of Luminar’s LiDAR technology in the F1 safety car could pave the way for further applications in consumer vehicles.
