The state attorney general stated on Friday that a man who used tied-up bedsheets to escape from a Pennsylvania county jail last year has been found guilty of crimes related to both the escape and abduction and has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison.

Attorney General Michelle Henry announced that Michael Burham, who entered a guilty plea to all counts in November of last year, was sentenced to three and a half to seven years in prison solely for his July escape from the Warren County Prison in northwest Pennsylvania.

On July 6, Burham, who was being held at the jail in part due to accusations of kidnapping, reportedly climbed on exercise equipment to get to a roof and slid down a rope made of sheets to escape. Following his escape, Burham—whom the authorities said to possess survivalist knowledge and experience from the military reserve—sparked a fervent manhunt involving over 200 law enforcement personnel. Later that month, Burham was apprehended in a forested region close to Warren, Pennsylvania.

Burham was incarcerated before his escape on accusations that he transported an elderly couple from Pennsylvania to South Carolina while attempting to elude a separate investigation in New York, according to police.

According to Henry’s office on Friday, a court in the abduction case has sentenced a defendant to between 21 years and 8 months and 43 years and 4 months.

According to Henry’s office, Burham has been ordered to serve a total of 25 years and two months to 50 years and four months in jail for the two sentences combined
