Baltimore Coach Allegedly Used Fake AI Voice to Get Principal Fired

PUBLISHED: April 26, 2024 at 6:53 am

At the center of the controversy is Principal Eric Eisworth of Pikesville High School. He was briefly relieved of his duties due to an ongoing investigation regarding a viral audio clip that depicted him making racially insensitive comments. Eisworth, however, was steadfast in maintaining his innocence throughout the entire process.

The individual accused of orchestrating the entire scandal is Dazhon Darien, the athletic director at Pikesville High School. Darien’s alleged motive for initiating this scandal was claimed to be retaliation against a probe launched by the principal into the potential misuse of school funds.

The audio clip, which was circulated amongst staff and on social media, appeared to feature Eisworth making derogatory comments about Black and Jewish individuals. The audio had a significant impact on Eisworth’s career and the school community, leading to a wave of hate-filled messages on various platforms and numerous calls to the school.

The three-month-long investigation involved local law enforcement and the FBI. It concluded that the contentious audio piece was a fabrication using AI tools, created by Dazhon Darien. The audio was analyzed by two forensic analysts specializing in AI, who confirmed that the recording had elements of AI-generated content.

Darien is believed to have used his Large Language Models, like OpenAI and Bing chat, to generate the counterfeit audio. The school director reportedly has a paid OpenAI account, allowing him access to more features than the free version.

Darien was arrested while attempting to board a flight to Houston and charged with several criminal counts, including disrupting a school operation and stalking. During a security check at the airport triggered by Darien’s attempt to declare a firearm, an arrest warrant issued the previous night came to light.

Following Darien’s release on a $5,000 unsecured bond, the administrative process to discipline him has begun, which could result in his termination. Baltimore County School Superintendent Myriam Rogers confirmed that the school is also investigating other teachers involved in spreading the false audio.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential misuse of AI technologies, highlighting the need for robust safeguards and ethical guidelines. AI voice scams have been on the rise, with fraudsters using advanced technology to mimic the voices of others and deceive individuals.

As AI continues to evolve and infiltrate various sectors, it is crucial to be aware of its potential misuse. This case serves as a prompt to always verify any information that seems suspicious, particularly when it involves potentially damaging allegations.

While this case demonstrates the potential misuse of AI, the technology also holds immense potential for positive impacts within the education sector. From personalized learning platforms to efficient administration tools, AI can significantly enhance teaching and learning experiences when used ethically and responsibly.
