Thieves Steal 200 Foot Radio Station Tower in Alabama

PUBLISHED: February 9, 2024 at 5:48 pm

A radio station in Alabama fell victim to a daring theft that left the community in disbelief. Thieves managed to steal a 200-foot radio tower, crippling the station’s ability to broadcast and leaving the station’s general manager, Brett Elmore, devastated. This crime not only robbed the station of its vital equipment but also silenced the voice of a small Alabama town and its surrounding county.

The theft of the 200-foot radio tower came to light on February 2, when a maintenance crew arrived at the site and found the tower missing. The crew also discovered that the nearby building housing the broadcasting equipment had been vandalized, and every piece of valuable equipment had been stolen. The shock and disbelief were palpable.

Brett Elmore, the general manager of the affected station, WJLX, expressed his astonishment upon receiving the news. He couldn’t fathom the tower’s disappearance and even questioned if the crew was in the right place. The reality sunk in as the crew described the wires strewn across the ground and the conspicuous absence of the tower.

WJLX radio station prided itself on being the sound of Walker County, and the loss of the tower meant the loss of the community’s voice. Elmore lamented the impact this theft had on the community, stating, “This hurts, and it hurts our community.” The absence of the station’s broadcasts left a void that could not be easily filled.

To compound the devastation, the thieves not only stole the tower but also ransacked the nearby building, taking every piece of broadcasting equipment. The station had no insurance coverage for the tower or the stolen equipment, leaving Elmore to estimate that it would cost between $60,000 and $100,000 to rebuild. As a small-market station, this financial burden seemed insurmountable.

Elmore speculated on the methods employed by the thieves to carry out this audacious crime. He suspected that the tower’s guy wire was cut first, causing the structure to collapse. The thieves then likely dismantled the tower into smaller, more manageable pieces and made off with their ill-gotten gains. Elmore mused that even basic tools from a store like Home Depot could have facilitated the dismantling process.

In the wake of this brazen theft, the Jasper police department launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators. However, the lack of substantial information has hindered progress thus far. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any tips or leads that could aid in solving the case.

Elmore, determined to rebuild and restore the station’s voice, has received an outpouring of support from people across the nation. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for the station’s recovery, and donations have been pouring in. While the road to recovery may be long and arduous, Elmore remains hopeful, stating, “We’re going to make it. I have to keep the faith that we’re going to make it.”

The loss of the radio tower and equipment has left WJLX radio station in a precarious position. With the station’s AM frequency rendered silent, the hope was to continue broadcasting through an FM translator. However, the FCC denied their request to stay on air, leaving the station on the brink of complete silence.

The impact of this theft extends beyond the financial and technical implications. WJLX radio station has been a fixture in the community since the mid-1950s, with Elmore continuing the work his father started before him. The station’s absence not only deprives the community of vital information and entertainment but also strips away a piece of its identity.

Despite the challenges ahead, Elmore and the entire community are determined to rebuild and restore WJLX radio station to its former glory. The support from individuals and organizations rallying behind the cause has given them hope during this dark time. While the loss is significant, the spirit of resilience and determination will guide them on their journey to recovery.
