Nex Benedict: A Tragic Tale of Teen Suicide

PUBLISHED: March 14, 2024 at 5:36 pm

The recent passing of 16-year-old Nex Benedict has shattered the tranquility of Owasso, Oklahoma, and sparked a nationwide conversation on the rise of anti-LGBTQ+ violence and bullying in schools. Identified as nonbinary, Benedict’s untimely death by suicide has led to intense scrutiny and debate, with many attributing the tragedy to relentless bullying at school.

Nex Benedict, a high school sophomore, departed from the world on February 8, 2024, just a day after a violent confrontation at Owasso High School. The tragedy has ignited an uproar throughout the country, highlighting the growing incidents of anti-LGBTQ+ violence and bullying.

The Owasso Police Department, which spearheaded the investigation, initially observed several indications suggesting suicide as the cause of death. However, they decided to withhold confirmation until the final results from the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office were made available.

The day prior to their death, Nex was embroiled in a fight with other students in the school bathroom, which eventually led to their suspension. According to the police report, Nex retaliated against a group of girls who were bullying them by splashing water on them. This action incited a physical altercation, during which Nex was severely beaten and subsequently lost consciousness.

Following Nex’s tragic demise, the Benedict family, through their attorney Jason Biby, released a heartfelt statement, expressing their grief and calling for meaningful change in addressing school violence and bullying. The family also announced their independent investigation into the events leading up to Nex’s death.

In a show of solidarity, Owasso High School students staged a walkout on February 25, honoring Nex and demonstrating their support for the school’s LGBTQ+ community. A GoFundMe campaign was also initiated in Nex’s memory, raising funds for anti-bullying initiatives.

Two weeks after Nex’s passing, multiple vigils were organized across the country to commemorate their life. Over 350 advocacy groups and LGBTQ+ activists also joined the cause, demanding the immediate removal of Oklahoma state superintendent, Ryan Walters.

The Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office finally declared Nex’s death as suicide, following a detailed examination. According to their report, Nex had ingested two types of medication, which likely led to their death. The Owasso Police Department, in response to the announcement, reiterated their earlier observations pointing towards suicide as the cause of death.

The medical examiner’s conclusion sparked a wave of reactions, with many attributing Nex’s suicide to intense bullying at school. Oklahoma’s Attorney General, in a social media post, expressed his concern and called for stricter measures to combat bullying in educational institutions.

Despite the sadness surrounding Nex’s passing, their story has ignited a much-needed conversation around the issue of bullying, particularly towards members of the LGBTQ+ community. Nex’s life and their unfortunate death underline the urgent need for change, not only in Owasso but across the country.
