The fire was reported to Hardy County 911 at around 5 AM, and the house was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived. One woman escaped the fire and was taken to a local medical facility for treatment.
A house fire in Mathias, Hardy County, West Virginia on January 7, 2024 killed five people, including four children:

A house fire on Woods Edge Road in Mathias, West Virginia was reported around 5 a.m. Saturday.

The West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office said the cause of the fire remains uncertain due to the extensive amount of damage to the structure. He said no smoke alarm was found among the debris.
The bodies of the victims are being transported to the WV Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies and positive identification.
