Texas National Guard: Building an 80-Acre Base in Eagle Pass to Enhance Border Security

PUBLISHED: February 16, 2024 at 6:01 pm

In a bid to strengthen border security and address the challenges posed by illegal immigration, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced plans to construct an 80-acre base in Eagle Pass for the Texas National Guard. This expansion comes as tensions between the state and the Biden administration continue to rise.

Abbott’s decision to establish a base camp stems from the growing need to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Texas Military Department personnel in Eagle Pass. The current living conditions for deployed soldiers have been deemed inadequate for military operations. By creating a dedicated base, the state aims to address these concerns and ensure that troops can carry out their duties more effectively.

The new facility will accommodate between 1,800 and 2,300 soldiers, depending on the deployment requirements. Each soldier will have access to individual rooms, a significant improvement from the previous scattered living arrangements in tents, hotels, and private residences. This consolidation will not only provide better accommodations but also improve coordination and response times.

The construction of the base camp in Eagle Pass will occur in phases, with the first phase expected to be completed by April. Major General Suelzer, the head of the Texas Military Department, explained that the camp will be equipped with 300 beds initially, with an additional 300 beds added every 30 days until the base is complete. The complex will include three command posts, weapons storage rooms, and a helicopter pad to support military operations along the border.

The new base camp will be located near Shelby Park, an area where Texas National Guard members have installed miles of razor wire to fortify the border. Access to the park has been restricted, preventing U.S. Border Patrol agents from monitoring the river and launching boats into the Rio Grande. The move to seize control of Shelby Park has generated controversy, with the mayor of Eagle Pass expressing concerns about the timing and necessity of these actions.

The U.S. Justice Department recently requested the intervention of the Supreme Court to allow Border Patrol agents back into Shelby Park. The Biden administration argues that the park serves as a vital location for monitoring and patrolling the border. The ongoing dispute underscores the complex dynamics between state and federal authorities regarding border security measures.

Operation Lone Star, launched by Governor Abbott in March 2021, has faced numerous challenges during its implementation. Early on, the Texas National Guard troops encountered issues such as delayed or insufficient pay, shortages of critical equipment, and cramped living conditions. A joint investigation by the Military Times and the Texas Tribune shed light on these problems, highlighting the need for improvements to support the guard’s mission.

The establishment of the base camp in Eagle Pass marks a significant step towards addressing these challenges. By providing better living conditions and access to necessary resources, the Texas National Guard can fulfill their duties more effectively and maintain the integrity of the border.

While Governor Abbott did not disclose the exact cost of constructing the base camp, the state’s commitment to border security suggests a significant investment. The base camp’s funding is likely to come from the $10 billion allocated to Operation Lone Star, emphasizing the state’s dedication to addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

The construction of an 80-acre base camp for the Texas National Guard in Eagle Pass represents a crucial development in efforts to enhance border security. Governor Abbott’s decision to consolidate troops in a dedicated facility aims to improve living conditions and operational efficiency. By addressing the challenges faced during Operation Lone Star, the state of Texas demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding its borders. As tensions continue to mount between the state and the federal government, the base camp will play a pivotal role in securing the border and deterring illegal immigration.
