Ex-Rock Musician Arrested Over Murder of Missing Girlfriend

PUBLISHED: January 5, 2024 at 7:57 am

A missing persons case has turned into a murder investigation after a woman with Hawaii ties was found dead in California. According to police, her boyfriend, a former rock band member, was arrested for murder.

Capitola Police report that the remains of Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann were found in Tilden Regional Park. It comes after a frantic search for the 61-year-old man over the holidays.

According to police, Herrmann was last seen alive on December 3 in Santa Cruz. Herrmann’s loved ones told KHON2, she was scheduled to fly to Maui on Dec. 12 for the holidays, but missed her flight.

“When he didn’t answer his calls, I texted him, we were worried if you could answer our calls and that’s when I knew something was wrong,” said Kamalu Carroll, a family friend.

Herrmann’s boyfriend, Theobald Lengyel, a founding member of the rock band Mister Bungle, is accused of her murder, according to police.

He was arrested on charges of murder on 2 December. Officials said that as the investigation continued, it became clear that foul play was involved.

“To know the outcome of her fate, that she won’t be coming home, is just heartbreaking,” Carroll said.

Herrmann, better known to family and friends as Alix, had roots in Hana, Maui. Loved ones said she lived in California but spent time visiting her parents. He further said that his love for the sea always took him to the next flight.

“Especially if there was a Queens race, the Sarah Jo Regatta, she was always willing to go to a workshop to teach her how to make paddles,” Carroll said.

Herrmann paddled for Hana Canoe Club on Maui and Outrigger Santa Cruz in California. Her crew said she was a great competitor. This week, they’re honoring their beloved companion by turning a canoe into a memorial.

“She was very reliable and was always a pleasure to be in the canoe with,” said Outrigger Santa Cruz teammate Theresa Mulder. “I mean his smile and his laugh.”

Family and friends are still grappling with the tragedy, but they said finding Herrmann is bringing some sense of closure.

“As her brother said, sometimes people go decades without knowing what happened to their family member. So the important thing was to bring Alix back,” Carroll said.
