Apple’s Warning: Don’t Put Your Wet iPhone in Rice

PUBLISHED: February 24, 2024 at 7:25 pm

Apple issued a warning about using a popular remedy for a wet iPhone: putting it in a bag of rice. Contrary to popular belief, this method can actually cause more harm than good. Apple explained that putting a water-soaked device in rice could allow small particles of rice to damage the iPhone.

Apple’s cautionary advice against using rice as a remedy for a wet iPhone comes as a surprise to many. For years, people have relied on this method, believing that the rice would absorb the moisture and save their device. However, Apple’s support note highlights the potential risks associated with this approach.

According to the technology company, small particles of rice can find their way into the delicate components of the iPhone, causing damage that may be irreparable. It’s essential to consider alternative methods to dry out a wet iPhone effectively.

If your iPhone gets wet, Apple recommends the following steps to potentially save your device:

  1. Disconnect from Power: If your iPhone is connected to a power source, unplug it immediately to prevent any potential electrical shorts.
  2. Turn Off Your iPhone: Press and hold the power button until you see the “Slide to power off” option. Slide it to power off your device.
  3. Remove Any Connected Accessories: If you have any accessories connected to your iPhone, such as a charging cable or headphones, disconnect them.
  4. Remove the SIM Card: Use the SIM card removal tool or a small paperclip to eject the SIM card tray. Take out the SIM card and set it aside.
  5. Gently Tap and Shake: Hold your iPhone with the Lightning connector facing down and gently tap it against your hand to remove any excess liquid. You can also shake it gently to help dislodge any trapped moisture.
  6. Dry Your iPhone: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to dry the exterior of your iPhone. Pay close attention to the Lightning connector, speaker grills, and microphone ports. Be careful not to insert the cloth into any openings.
  7. Let it Air Dry: Find a dry area with good airflow and leave your iPhone there for at least 30 minutes. This allows any remaining moisture to evaporate.
  8. Check for Moisture: After 30 minutes, inspect your iPhone for any signs of moisture. Look for water droplets in the Lightning connector or condensation behind the camera lenses. If you notice any moisture, continue to let your device air dry for a longer period.
  9. Reinsert the SIM Card: Once you are confident that your iPhone is dry, reinsert the SIM card into the tray and carefully slide it back into the device.
  10. Power On Your iPhone: Press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears. If your iPhone turns on successfully, it’s a good sign that it has dried out and should function normally.
  11. Test the Functions: Test various functions of your iPhone to ensure everything is working correctly. Make a phone call, play music, take photos, and connect to Wi-Fi to verify that all features are functioning as expected.

If you follow these steps and your iPhone still exhibits issues, such as not turning on or experiencing water-related problems, it’s essential to contact Apple Support or visit an authorized service provider for further assistance.

While rice may not be the ideal solution for a wet iPhone, there are alternative methods you can try to help dry out your device. These methods aim to remove moisture and prevent potential damage. Some of the alternatives include:

Silica gel packets, often found in shoeboxes or packaging, are known for their moisture-absorbing properties. Placing your wet iPhone in a sealed container with several silica gel packets can help draw out the moisture more effectively than rice. Remember to remove the SIM card and any accessories before sealing the container.

Similar to silica gel packets, desiccant packs are specifically designed to absorb moisture. These packs are commonly used in food packaging or medication bottles. Placing your wet iPhone in a sealed bag with desiccant packs can help expedite the drying process.

Using compressed air to remove moisture from your iPhone can be an effective method. However, it’s crucial to use low-pressure air and avoid direct contact with the device to prevent any potential damage. If you choose this method, exercise caution and ensure the air compressor is set to a safe pressure level.

Another option is to place your wet iPhone in a vacuum-sealed bag with a moisture-absorbing material, such as silica gel packets or desiccant packs. The vacuum-sealed bag creates a low-pressure environment that can help draw out the moisture from your device.

Remember to keep your iPhone powered off during the drying process and follow the same steps mentioned earlier to ensure the best chance of success.

While accidents happen, there are measures you can take to prevent your iPhone from getting wet in the first place. Consider the following tips to protect your device:

  1. Waterproof or Water-Resistant Cases: Invest in a high-quality waterproof or water-resistant case for your iPhone. These cases provide an extra layer of protection against water damage.
  2. Avoid Water Exposure: Be mindful of where you place your iPhone and avoid exposing it to water or other liquids. Keep it away from pools, sinks, bathrooms, and other potentially wet environments.
  3. Use Ziplock Bags or Waterproof Pouches: If you’re planning to be near water, such as at the beach or pool, consider using a sealed ziplock bag or waterproof pouch to keep your iPhone protected.
  4. Remove Your iPhone from Pockets Before Washing Clothes: Accidentally washing your iPhone along with your laundry can result in severe water damage. Always double-check your pockets before tossing your clothes in the washing machine.

By taking these precautions, you can minimize the risk of your iPhone getting wet and potentially avoid the need for any drying methods altogether.
