A Nevada judge returned to court a day after being attacked by the defendant in an aggravated battery case. The incident was captured on video.
He was accused of moving to the judge’s bench and “supermanning” him after it became clear he was being sentenced to prison, a court official said Thursday.
According to Chief Judge Jerry Wiese, defendant Deobra Redden will face Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus again Monday morning for her rescheduled sentencing.
At a news conference Thursday, Wiese shared a statement from Holthus, who was thrown back from her seat against a wall when the defendant landed on top of her and grabbed her hair, dropping an American flag on them. Courthouse officials said Holthus suffered some injuries and was evaluated but not hospitalized.
Documents obtained by KLAS-TV investigators reportedly show that Redden told officers after the incident that he was having a bad day and that he had attempted to kill her.
Redden, who is being held in jail on $54,000 bail, did not appear in court Thursday to face new charges related to the attack. Wiese said Thursday that his next appearance in court is scheduled for Tuesday, and Redden will face Holthus again.
In the wake of the incident, there has been a renewed focus on enhancing security measures within court facilities to ensure the safety of judges, court personnel, and the public. The imperative to create a secure and conducive environment for dispensing justice is paramount in upholding the integrity of the judicial system.
