A California man has been sentenced to 140 years in prison for brutally raping a 9-year-old girl and a 32-year-old jogger over two decades ago. What makes this case even more disturbing is that the perpetrator, Kevin Konther, tried to shift the blame onto his own identical twin brother.
The horrifying crimes took place in the 1990s, leaving lasting scars on the victims. Kevin Konther targeted a 9-year-old girl and a 32-year-old jogger, subjecting them to unimaginable trauma. In the first assault, which occurred on October 21, 1995, Konther raped the young girl at knifepoint as she walked home alone from a shopping trip. He forcefully dragged her down an embankment to a secluded park, leaving her traumatized and naked. The girl bravely reported the rape to her mother, initiating the search for the perpetrator.
Three years later, on June 2, 1998, Konther struck again. This time, he attacked a 32-year-old woman as she jogged in Mission Viejo. Emerging from the bushes, Konther dragged her down an embankment and subjected her to a brutal sexual assault. These heinous acts terrorized the community and left the victims scarred for life.

For years, these crimes remained unsolved, leaving the victims without closure. However, advancements in genetic genealogy finally provided a breakthrough in 2018. Detectives at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office utilized genealogical DNA testing to identify potential suspects, ultimately leading them to Kevin Konther and his identical twin brother.
In 2019, the twins were taken into custody, but it became clear early on that Kevin Konther was the primary suspect. Conversations between the brothers, which were covertly recorded, played a crucial role in pinpointing Kevin as the perpetrator. These recordings captured incriminating statements made by Kevin, while his twin expressed shock at the allegations against him.
The relentless pursuit of justice by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office resulted in Kevin Konther’s trial in February 2023. A jury found him guilty of multiple felony charges, including two counts of forcible rape and one count of a lewd and lascivious act with a minor. The district attorney’s office pushed for the maximum penalty, and on Friday, Konther was sentenced to 140 years in prison by a judge in Orange County Superior Court.
District Attorney Todd Spitzer expressed satisfaction with the sentencing, stating, “The relentless pursuit of justice by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has ensured that another monster who preys on young girls and young women will never be free to jump out of the bushes again.”
While the sentencing of Kevin Konther brings some measure of closure to the victims, the emotional scars they carry will last a lifetime. These horrific crimes have undoubtedly left a lasting impact on their lives, and the road to healing will be a challenging one. It is essential to support and provide resources for survivors of sexual assault, ensuring they receive the assistance they need to rebuild their lives.
