Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan have a unique approach to maintaining their long-standing marital bond. Their secret? A simple rule that they adhere to unfailingly.
Susan Downey, wife of Robert Downey Jr., recently unveiled the secret behind their 18-year sturdy marriage. “We have a two-week rule, which sometimes feels too long, but we never go beyond two weeks without seeing each other and being together as a family,” Susan revealed in a recent interview.
“We turn into a traveling circus whenever possible,” the producer added, referring to their children Exton, 12, and Avri, 9.
The Downey couple doesn’t view their two-week rule as an unyielding regulation. They understand that life is unpredictable, and they adapt to whatever comes their way. “You keep the basic rule of two weeks, and then you don’t overthink the future as our life is quite unpredictable. You just never know,” Susan explained.
Robert Downey Jr., 58, also has a son, Indio, 30, from his previous marriage to singer Deborah Falconer. The actor’s family life is as dynamic as his career, and he appreciates the stability that their two-week rule provides.
Robert Downey Jr. had a successful award season. He won a British Academy Film Award, a Critics’ Choice Movie Award, a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and an Oscar for his role as Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer.” In every acceptance speech, he made it a point to thank Susan.
“I’d like to thank my veterinarian — I mean my wife, Susan Downey, over there,” he joked at the Oscars. “She found me a snarling rescue pet and you love me back to life. That’s why I’m here.”
The Downey couple first met on the set of the 2003 film “Gothika,” where Susan was serving as a producer. Three months later, Robert Downey Jr. proposed, and they tied the knot in 2005.
