Gemma Gilfoyle, a 39-year-old beautician, took a significant step to enhance her eyeliner application skills. She invested $1.5K (equivalent to £1.2k) on a surgical procedure to partially remove her upper eyelids. This audacious move was driven by her long-standing dislike for her hooded eyes.
Being in the beauty industry, Gilfoyle was always conscious of her hooded eyes. She first heard about the procedure of removing the hooded eyes from her clients at her salon. Intrigued by their experiences, Gemma decided to research more about the procedure, primarily focusing on the results on younger skin.
After some research, Gemma found a clinic in Amsterdam that specialized in the procedure she wanted. She had a 30-minute phone consultation with a specialist who explained what the surgery entailed. Gilfoyle was satisfied with the consultation and decided to proceed with the surgery.
The procedure cost her $1,582.72 (£1,270). Besides the surgery, she spent an additional $355.16 (£285) for two nights in a hotel and $747.70 (£600) for return flights to Amsterdam for herself and her husband, Ryan, 40, an air conditioning engineer. The surgery took place on February 10, 2024, and was conducted while Gemma was awake.
During the procedure, Gemma received a local anesthetic inside her eye. Her eyes were closed as the surgeons plucked the excess skin. The entire procedure took around 30 minutes and, according to Gemma, was not painful.
After the surgery, Gilfoyle was left with a 2-inch scar behind her right eye. Her eyes began to bruise on the second day, swelled for six days, and she was told to expect four months of scarring. She was instructed to wash her eyes with a saline solution and take paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain management. She was also advised not to use soap on her face.
Despite the scarring, Gemma was thrilled with the outcome of the surgery. She expressed her excitement about applying makeup on her new eyelids and was pleased with her decision to undergo the procedure.
