Mel B, also known as Scary Spice from the iconic girl group Spice Girls, has opened up about her journey of rebuilding her life after leaving her abusive ex-husband, Stephen Belafonte.
After 15 years in the United States, Mel B returned to her native country, Britain, in 2019. Little did the world know that behind the glitz and glamour of her music career, she had been enduring emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her ex-husband. In March 2017, she filed for divorce from Belafonte, accusing him of abuse, allegations he vehemently denied.
Moving back to Britain was not an easy transition for Mel B. The tabloids and the public often assumed that as a successful Spice Girl, she was financially secure. However, she revealed in an interview with The Sun that she had very little to her name when she left her ex-husband. With only £700 in her bank account, she found herself sharing a bed with her children and having to rely on budget supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl.
Despite the challenges she faced, Mel B embraced the opportunity to start anew. She realized that she had to rebuild her life from the ground up. In her own words, she said, “Oh my God, I am going to have to start from scratch. Ground Zero.” This realization motivated her to take control of her own finances and her future.

She also made conscious choices to live within her means, shopping at budget supermarkets to make ends meet. This marked the beginning of her journey towards financial freedom and taking back control of her life.
Mel B’s experience with abuse has made her a passionate advocate for survivors of domestic violence. She dedicates her time to supporting domestic abuse groups and raising awareness about the different forms of abuse, including financial abuse. Through her own story, she wants to show that abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of their fame or success.
She believes it is essential to empower survivors and help them rebuild their lives. Mel B spends a significant amount of time speaking to abuse survivors, offering them encouragement and guidance. She wants to be a shining example that it is possible to overcome the darkest of times and emerge stronger on the other side.
While Mel B has come a long way on her healing journey, she acknowledges that she is a work in progress. Anxiety still lingers, but she continues to push forward. One source of strength and support in her life is her fiancé, Rory McPhee, a 36-year-old hairdresser from Leeds. Their longstanding friendship formed the foundation of trust and respect that helps Mel B in her ongoing healing process.
Through her own experiences, Mel B has learned firsthand the importance of self-care and mental well-being. She advocates for others to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. Her journey of healing serves as a reminder that it is okay to ask for support and that there is strength in vulnerability.
