In her interview, Love revealed her musical preferences, expressing admiration for musicians like Patti Smith, Nina Simone, PJ Harvey, and Debbie Harry. These artists, known for their unique voices and revolutionary approaches to music, seem to resonate with Love’s own musical philosophy.
Despite her appreciation for these artists, Love did not hold back her criticism for Taylor Swift. She referred to Swift as “not important” and “not interesting as an artist”. Love suggested that while Swift might be a safe choice for young listeners and could be considered the modern-day Madonna, she does not find Swift’s music captivating.
Love also shared her thoughts on Lana Del Rey, the headliner for Coachella 2024. She admitted that she hasn’t enjoyed Del Rey’s music since her cover of John Denver’s song and suggested that Del Rey should take a break from music. According to Love, Del Rey’s influence was so strong that she had to stop listening to her while recording her own album.
Notably, Love also expressed her disapproval of Madonna, stating, “I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me.” While she admired Madonna’s film Desperately Seeking Susan, she clarified that it was more for its representation of New York than for Madonna herself.
Though Love is not hesitant to criticize artists she doesn’t resonate with, she has a history of standing up for women in the music industry. In March 2023, Love wrote an op-ed for the Guardian, criticizing the lack of female representation in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She pointed out the disparity in nominations, asserting that women need to be extraordinary to break into the male-dominated institution.
Love’s op-ed, titled “Why Are Women So Marginalised by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?,” opened with her describing her passion for rock n’ roll. She pointed out that while more women were nominated for the Rock Hall in 2023 than at any other time in its 40-year history, there was still a glaring lack of recognition for the contributions of women to the music industry.
