The city that never sleeps, New York City, is experiencing a technological revolution. The field of health and wellness, specifically spas and doctor’s offices, is witnessing an unprecedented takeover by robots.
First on our list is the emergence of Automated AI Masseuses. New York-based company, Aescape, has pioneered the first commercially accessible robotic masseuse, shaking up the wellness industry.
Contrary to the traditional mall massage chair, this AI masseuse is a considerable tech upgrade that promises to work even faster than a human masseuse.
For a mere $60, anyone who downloads the Aescape app can book a 30-minute massage session. The service is expected to be available to the public at ten Equinox locations across NYC this spring, making it accessible to everyone, not just Equinox members.
The AI-enhanced massage tables developed by Aescape utilize two robotic “arms” that scan the user’s body. This scan, performed while the user is dressed in friction-free clothing provided by Aescape, generates over 1.1 million 3D data points creating a comprehensive body map. This data then guides the robotic “hands” to execute a targeted and personalized massage, controlled from a touchscreen beneath the headrest.

Eric Litman, founder and CEO of Aescape, emphasizes the goal of creating a familiar experience for users. He mentions, “Our robots move in a way that feels very familiar. That’s what’s really important. This had to feel like something that you already understand. But at the same time, we really wanted to empower the capabilities that could only be delivered through technology.”
But the revolution doesn’t stop at massages. Now, for just 10 dollars and 10 minutes of your time, you can get a professional manicure, thanks to AI-powered robots. You can find these nail artists at Rockefeller Center, Hudson Yards, and JFK Airport.
The state of New York is also employing robots to combat the loneliness epidemic among the elderly. Hundreds of elderly residents have received robots that can remind them to take their medication, help contact loved ones, book an Uber ride, and even engage in small talk and crack jokes.
Robots are also making their way into medical offices. Companies like Prenuvo and Forward are leveraging AI to improve preventative medicine. Prenuvo offers MRI body scans to detect various health conditions early, while Forward is set to introduce CarePod, “the world’s first AI doctor’s office,” acting as a self-service cube for patients.
When asked why Aescape chose NYC to launch its innovative robot masseuse, Litman cited the city’s population of motivated individuals who seek the most out of life with quick target services. He believes that as we’re living longer, we have the opportunity to live better, longer if we take care of ourselves from an earlier stage in life.
