Apple Drops Exciting iOS 17.4 Beta 2 Update

PUBLISHED: February 7, 2024 at 5:50 pm

Apple has recently released iOS 17.4 beta 2, bringing a host of exciting new features and emoji to your iPhone. This update is currently available to developers and beta testers, offering a glimpse into the future of iOS. In this article, we will explore the major changes introduced in iOS 17.4 beta 2, including enhanced app store options, improved in-app payments, and an array of new emoji characters.

One of the significant changes introduced in iOS 17.4 beta 1 is the ability for users in the European Union (EU) to download alternative app stores and applications outside of the App Store. This marks a major shift in Apple’s App Store policy and is in compliance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act. With iOS 17.4, users in the EU will have more control over their iPhone experience, with the option to explore different app stores and customize their device to their preferences.

iOS 17.4 beta 1 also brings new options for in-app payments. Users can now navigate to the “Settings > Privacy & Security” menu and access the “Contactless & NFC” option. This feature allows for additional ways to make payments within apps using contactless and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. While initially introduced alongside the changes for the EU, it remains to be seen if these options will be available globally.

Apple says iPhone iOS 17.4 update will take a surprise Users

In the initial beta release of iOS 17.4, there was a regional identifier called “Identifiable_Region.” This feature allowed users to view their device’s regional information in the “Settings > General > About” section. However, with iOS 17.4 beta 2, this regional identifier has been removed. While the reason behind its removal is unclear, it is possible that this feature was not intended for user visibility in the first place.

iOS 17.4 introduces over 100 new emoji characters, bringing even more expressive options for users. Among the new additions are a phoenix, a slice of lime, and broken chains. These emoji characters were announced in 2023 and have already been available on some Android devices. Now, iPhone users can enjoy these vibrant and diverse emoji options on their devices as well.

With iOS 17.4 beta 1, Apple enhances the Stolen Device Protection feature introduced in iOS 17.3. Users now have the choice to require a one-hour Security Delay for certain settings and changes, or only when they are away from their familiar locations, such as their homes. Although Stolen Device Protection does not protect all user data, Apple recommends enabling this feature to safeguard important information in case of device theft or unauthorized access.

iOS 17.4 beta introduces a new feature that allows users to access transcripts of their favorite podcasts. While listening to a podcast, users can tap the show’s banner at the bottom of the screen and find a new button with a speech bubble icon. Tapping this button reveals the transcript of the ongoing episode, enabling users to search within the transcript for specific keywords or references. This feature enhances the podcast listening experience, making it easier to follow along and find specific information.

The second beta release of iOS 17.4 introduces a new digital clock app widget called City Digital. This widget displays the time and a set location, regardless of the user’s current location. It proves particularly useful for travelers or individuals who want to keep track of time in different time zones without disturbing others. This new widget follows the introduction of the digital clock widget in iOS 17.2, further expanding customization options for users.

Apple’s iOS 17.3 is Here and it’s Revolutionizing Device Security

iOS 17.4 beta 1 brings a Home button to the Apple Music and Books apps. Located at the bottom of the screen, this button replaces the “Listen Now” and “Read Now” features, respectively. Tapping the Home button in Apple Music provides quick access to menus like Recently Played and personalized recommendations based on the user’s listening habits. In the Books app, the Home button offers menus such as Current Bestsellers and Start Reading for Free. This change aims to create consistency across Apple’s suite of apps.

Siri receives an upgrade in iOS 17.4 beta, allowing users to send messages in multiple languages. By navigating to “Settings > Siri & Search,” users can find the “Messaging with Siri” option. This feature expands Siri’s capabilities to include sending messages in languages like Arabic, Spanish, and Thai. However, it’s important to note that selecting a language from this list does not change Siri’s primary language for listening and responding.

The Clock app’s stopwatch function receives a convenient update in iOS 17.4 beta 1. When using the stopwatch on iPhones with Live Activities, such as the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 15, the stopwatch now displays at the top of the screen even when users navigate away from the app. This improvement allows users to keep track of time while using other applications or even when viewing the home screen.
