With his son on his way to get help, Kevin Howell fought against the freezing waters, attempting to save himself and his wife. Katie Howell, upon hearing the distressing news from their son, immediately called 911 and rushed to the scene with an anchor and rope in hand. However, as she tried to secure the rope on the shore, tragedy struck again, and she too fell through the fragile ice, unable to escape its icy grip.

Fortunately, Penobscot County sheriff’s detective Jordan Norton was nearby and responded swiftly to the distress call. He spotted Katie struggling in the frigid water and wasted no time in springing into action. Crawling across the treacherous and fragile ice, Norton held onto the rope and managed to pull Katie to safety. However, despite their valiant efforts, Kevin Howell remained missing.

With the arrival of the Maine Warden Service, State Police, and the Carmel Fire Department, a rigorous search and recovery operation was launched. Six divers from the Warden Service and one State Police diver joined forces to locate Kevin Howell.
