In the digital age, we capture countless moments with our smartphones. However, managing and organizing these photos can quickly become overwhelming. Thankfully, Google Photos has come to the rescue once again with its latest update for Android users. Introducing “Photo Stacks,” a revolutionary feature backed by AI that aims to declutter and organize our messy galleries.
Photo Stacks is a new feature introduced by Google Photos that aims to streamline the organization of similar photos and videos. Essentially, it groups together photos and videos taken within a close time frame, creating a stack under a single thumbnail. This eliminates the need for scrolling through multiple individual images, providing a more organized and visually pleasing gallery experience.
The Impact of Gemini and AI on Google’s Stock Performance
The AI-powered Photo Stacks feature utilizes advanced algorithms to analyze the content of your photos and videos. By identifying visual similarities and timestamps, it intelligently groups them together into stacks. For instance, if you take a series of photos of your pet in a similar pose, instead of cluttering your gallery with individual shots, Google Photos will stack them neatly under a single thumbnail.
When you open the Google Photos app, you can easily locate your stacks in the main Photo view. Look for the double-page icon at the top-right corner of the thumbnail, indicating a stack. Tapping on a stack will open a scrollable carousel, allowing you to browse through the images within the stack. You can swipe left or right to view each photo or video, and if you prefer a grid view, simply tap the 2×2 option at the bottom of the carousel.
Google Photos understands that personalization is key, even when it comes to organizing our memories. Within each stack, you have the flexibility to designate a “top pick” image. This image will be displayed larger than the rest, giving it prominence within the stack. Additionally, if there are any photos that you feel don’t belong in a particular stack, you can easily remove them. This allows you to curate your stacks and ensure that they accurately represent your most cherished moments.
Sharing memories with friends and family is an essential part of the Google Photos experience. With Photo Stacks, sharing becomes even more convenient. If you want to share specific photos within a stack, simply long-press on the desired image and tap “Share.” Alternatively, if you wish to share the entire cluster of photos and videos within a stack, tap “Includes Photo Stacks” after selecting “Share.”

While Photo Stacks offer a convenient way to organize your gallery, Google understands that personal preferences may vary. Therefore, they have provided users with the option to enable or disable the Photo Stacks feature. If you find that stacks are not aligning with your organizational style, or if you simply prefer the traditional view of individual photos, you can easily toggle the feature on or off.
Google Photos initially introduced the Photo Stacks feature to iOS users in November 2023. However, Android users had to wait patiently for the feature to arrive on their devices. The wait is finally over, as Google has started rolling out Photo Stacks for Android users. The update is being gradually released, so keep an eye out for the new splash screen that will appear after updating the Google Photos app.
